There are several things that affect VoIP call quality. The most significant factor is the speed and latency of the IP connection between the two points involved in the call. VoIP calls can be much clearer than analog calls, but at the same time round trip delay time on the IP network can introduce delay on the call. A little delay is OK, but if the delay increases the voice call becomes un-natural and two-way conversation becomes difficult. Another problem is IP packet loss which causes the call to become garbled. Just about any IP network can carry a few simultaneous calls, but as the number of calls increase you will experience some call quality problems unless you optimize your network for voice traffic.
