What standard is used to certify rugged computers? | Print |  E-mail

The MIL-810 rev. F is the standard used to test and certify rugged computing equipment.  This is a suite of standards which the US Military uses to rate a piece of equipment in its resistance to environments which will be encountered in field use.  The environments are not unreasonable, like the vacuum of space or crushing sub oceanic pressure, but uncomfortable.  The areas tested are: Resistance to heat and cold (a range of temperatures that you would find in vehicle use).  Resistance to shock, specifically a number of drops of three feet on to a plywood surface over concrete (use your imagination on how this can help you).  Resistance to vibration (typically encountered if the computer is vehicle mounted or if it is used in a manufacturing facility).  Resistance to moisture (humidity as well as driving rain, once again uncomfortable, not life threatening) Resistance to dust infiltration (encountered in all sorts of manufacturing and outdoor tasks).
